Scott W. Mates, LCSW,
Registered Play Therapist

I am passionate about working with individuals (both young and old) helping provide support while they move towards growth while creating a deeper sense of their life's purpose and meaning. I have a genuine appreciation for others and a willingness of joining my clients on their journeys to wholeness. I easily connect with my clients providing comfort and support, while offering them a safe and trusting place for them to voice and share their stories.

I have a deep love and genuine appreciation for the human experience, and for the connection and bond that forms in the therapeutic relationship. I have been told that one of my greatest strengths is my ability to join and connect with others and that it is most clear when one sits down to talk (or play) with me for any length of time. My clinical work blends traditional talk therapy with the expressive, creative and playful process which I find invites a deepening into the unfolding story of our lives. The use of symbolism and metaphor along with imagery and self expression, creates multiple opportunities for healing which open new pathways, both internally and externally.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is simple. It is holistic, experiential and natural. My approach integrates my core belief of how an individuals emotional, physical, spiritual, and social components all affect the different stages of our development as human beings. Not only are each of these areas considered during the course of my practice, but each are deeply explored as is relevant to each beings needs. Research has informed us that all of our experiences throughout life have a way of creating memories for us within us. Memories that not only live within our brain, but rather that exist and live within all of the many many cells within our very bodies. This is why my work with clients goes deeper than just traditional talk therapy. Talk therapy only scratches the surface of the many conditions that exist within each of us.  My work and approach incorporates what we call the mind-body approach. My interventions utilize aspects and components of movement, expressive arts, music and sound, aromatherapy and other non-traditional experimental and integrative techniques. It is my belief that such offers clients an opportunity to both access and experience connection with deep rooted memories and associations, which aids the process of clients then being able to tap into and access parts of the self that are seldom communicated with. Clients can then not only examine but actually "re-write" narratives for and about themselves that they have been adhering to for quite sometime. I consistently provide support and practical feedback to my clients in an effort to effectively assist them in addressing their personal life challenges. My offerings of compassion and understanding, foster empowerment for clients an effort to build upon their own strengths and attain the personal growth they seek and are committed to discovering.

My approach is rooted in mindfulness and compassion. Mindfulness offers us the opportunity to be present in our lives and our experiences (pleasant or unpleasant), while compassion informs us on how to become a friend to others but most importantly ourselves during times of difficulty, suffering, challenge and despair. My theory is: When we can meet our suffering with presence and space, while extending a hand and offering heart, we are gifted with the opportunity to walk through and overcome our sufferings, yielding transformation of our negative reactions into more compassionate and caring responses. My approach creates space for those to be, just as they are, offering them genuine acceptance and understanding in a safe, nurturing and non-judgmental atmosphere.
